Allergies – Our Journey with Gluten, Dairy and Egg – Part 2

Well, I’m back again with our crazy journey of discovering the effects of gluten, dairy and egg on our bodies. I think I left off from Allergies Part 1 about how our oldest daughter, Elisabeth, had to stop playing basketball due to always getting a terrible cold and; of course, then it would run into pneumonia. Click here to see the herbal protocol I gave her to keep the pneumonia at bay.

Six or seven months after having really bad pneumonia and going through several rounds of strong antibiotics our daughter started complaining about having terrible stomach cramps. I didn’t think any thing of it at first. I figured it was probably gas or something and would work its way out. hehe  Around about that same time, our middle child, Sarah, started hacking constantly. She hacked all the time day and night. It just about drove the whole house crazy. It sounded like that deep cough – like she was trying to cough up a lung – like she had been smoking for years. It was horrible!!! Really – no kidding!!!

One day, I had had enough so I called their pediatrician and scheduled an appointment. During this second time of going to the doctor, our oldest daughter, Elisabeth, continued to get worse. Not only was she experiencing terrible stomach cramps but now she had progressed to having horrible digestive issues which kept her in the restroom for long periods of time. We learned later this was an allergic reaction from eating gluten, dairy, and egg. In addition to that problem, she started breaking out with hives all over her body.  I asked our pediatrician to give us a referral to see an allergy specialist but he thought it would be best to first start eliminating several foods a week and then revisit his office every couple of weeks. If anyone has had any experience with food allergies, this food elimination game can last for a while until you stubble upon the correct food that is causing all the problems. I was so frustrated that our daughter was in such misery and nothing drastic was being done.

At that same time, our pediatrician ordered X-Rays and a Pulmonary Function Test for our middle child, Sarah. He was thinking she either had Asthma or there was something wrong with her lungs since she was hacking all the time and coughing up lots of mucus. Well, both tests came back just fine – no Asthma. I was relieved but that still didn’t find the problem.

Even then, their pediatrician thought it was best to continue trying different foods every couple of weeks to see their reactions instead of giving me a referral to an allergist. I was seriously at my wit’s end; I wasn’t sure whether to go on with the pediatrician or try something myself. I didn’t know what to do so I started praying harder than ever now. I was afraid not do what the doctor wanted but then our girls were not getting any better. We are so conditioned to do exactly what the doctors says that I was paralyzed as to what should be done! Plus, we were spending money we really didn’t have every time we visited the doctor – nothing seemed to be helping!!!!  Something had to give – we couldn’t keep going like this!

Oh bless you. I think even in this country where GPs (General Practitioners – aka Doctors) are “free” you end up having to tell them what’s wrong with you. The older I get the more I realise that I know my own body best and I should listen to my gut. Doctors don’t like saying that they “don’t know” or pushing to a specialist, you seem to have to push for that yourself if that’s what you want. Unfortunately western medicine still seems to rely heavily on the drug industry and doesn’t try the alternatives first as they do in the East. I always think its worth trying alternative/natural remedies first and then when that doesn’t work then go on to drugs if that is the right thing for you. I wish we took more of a leaf out of eastern medicines book in that regard. Wishing you the best of luck with everything Look forward to seeing as your story unfolds.

Yes, you are so right. Our bodies work so much better when we try natural alternatives first. There are some doctors that are starting to move in that direction but it takes so long to change what has already been established as the best option in society. Thank so much for your comment.

Hi Rebeka! Thank you so much for sharing your family’s story. It is so important to share our stories in order to help educate others.

I suffered many years with IBS before being diagnosed with gluten intolerance. Since my husband and I started eating gluten free (over six years now), our health has totally changed. It is so scary when medical professionals tell you one thing but you know their “prescription” in not fixing the problem, only putting a band aid on it.

Looking forward to reading Part 3 of your journey!
